Congratulations to Doug Miller, Mike Hooper and Bang Golf Winners at the Re/Max World Long Drive Championships

Winning $14,000 was the super senior champion (55 and over), 57-year-old Doug Miller of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Miller probably was the happiest man in Nevada, because his victory was the longest of long shots. To get here for the World Championship, he competed in seven different qualifying events before earning a spot in Mesquite.

"That's how much I love it," said Miller, a Pizza Hut supervisor. "I spent several thousand dollars just trying to qualify. I missed the first six times and got in on the seventh. I had to fly to Dallas (Texas) to do that."

Miller used a Bang Storm driver head with a Stolz shaft. "I just got the Bang Storm driver yesterday," he said after winning. "It's the best driver I've ever had."

His opponent in the final, Bill Droege, had a 325-yard drive on the board when Miller uncorked a 327-yarder on the fifth of his six balls.

Although there was a time when many long-drive competitors used outrageously long drivers – Wedgy Winchester won the world title with a 60-inch driver – this is no longer true. The current maximum length, as dictated by the Long Drivers of America, is 48 inches. However, this is measured in an unusual fashion that equates to about 49.5 inches on the U.S. Golf Association scale.
